O Ministry of Justice and Public Security will remain with National Force at the Rio de Janeiro for another 30 days, marking the third consecutive extension granted by the federal government. Since its implementation in October last year, around 300 agents have been patrolling federal roads in the state in response to the increase in violence.
The measure, which has been renewed in response to the governor’s requests, aims to reinforce public security in Rio, amid a context of persistent challenges. The National Force’s operations have generated a significant financial impact, costing more than R$10 million to the public coffers in just one month of operation, according to official reports.
The extension of the presence of the National Force was based on a government decree, which highlights support for federal and state public security bodies, aiming to preserve public order and the security of people and property. The measure is part of a broader strategy to combat crime and protect the population.
Governor Castro announced in September last year a “task force” for Complexo da Maré and other parts of the city, with the creation of a permanent intelligence committee to guide police actions. The task force involves a joint effort by the Military, Civil, Federal Highway, Federal Police and the National Force, forming the Integrated Crime Combat Force (Fico), in search of effective results in reducing crime in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
