I write “none” in quotation marks because, honestly, our state has been discredited. Last week, Exame magazine released the ranking of the 100 best restaurants in Brazil and, surprisingly, no establishment in Santa Catarina was included.

According to information from Casual Exame itself, the establishments were selected with the help of a jury made up of 72 renowned food critics and influencers.

Each expert named ten restaurants of their preference, in no order of importance. Last year, Santa Catarina had only one representative on the list: Ostradamus, in Florianópolis, by chef Jaime Barcellos.

Considering that I have already been to 22 of the 100 restaurants listed and tried 6 of the Top 10, I can speak with authority on the subject. Several award-winning and renowned chefs have already been cooking here at Villa do Vale for special dinners.

I made a point of counting the ranking by state: São Paulo leads the way with 47 restaurants; followed by Rio de Janeiro with 19; Minas Gerais with 10; Paraná with 7; Bahia with 5; Pernambuco with 4; Rio Grande do Sul with 3; Amazons with 2; and, tied for 8th place, Mato Grosso, Pará and Distrito Federal, all with one representative each.

Santa Catarina is a state full of natural beauty, culture and valuable inputs used by most of these award-winning restaurants. As an example, we can mention the carabineiro shrimp, sent throughout the country via Penha by Saulo do Camarão. Next door, in Blumenau, the Mendes brothers have been producing the highest quality cheeses at Vermont Queijos, so much so that weeks ago they received the award for best in the world at the Cheese World Cup with the Morro Azul product. Not to mention the quality of our native oysters, also used throughout Brazil in the best restaurants.

In terms of restaurants, I will mention just three examples that could easily make the list, excluding Ostradamus which, unfortunately and unfairly, left the ranking this year: Restaurante Dudu, run by the brilliant Chef Dudu Perener, in Balneário Camboriú; Rosso Restaurante, by Chef Alysson Muller, in Florianópolis; and Vistta – Altitude Kitchen, in Praia Grande, Canyons region.

I leave the question: where have the 72 renowned critics and influencers been to even notice a single establishment in our state, or what kind of “influence” would be necessary to appear on such a list? Or perhaps there are just a lack of jurors from Santa Catarina, making me available to the magazine, if that is the case.
