The government of Rio Grande do Norte and Petrobras signed this Monday (29) a memorandum of understanding to installation of a pilot project for an offshore wind power generation plant.

According to the president of Petrobras, Jean-Paul Prates, the expectation is that the partnership will favor the implementation of the project, with an estimated investment of between R$2 million and R$3 million. The equipment must be installed by 2029

“This means that Petrobras will begin, with partners, such as the Senai Innovation Institute, and now with the state government, to study in practice what it means to generate wind energy at sea. The idea is to install a pilot plant with a wind turbine, probably close to the port of Areia Branca, but we are still analyzing the location”, said Prates.

“It (project) will test the relationships of these future projects with communities, with the environment. It will be a laboratory, an outpost of offshore wind energy generation activity in Brazil, even before the law is processed”, stated the company president.

Petrobras’ general manager of renewables, Daniel Faro, highlighted that the memorandum favors interaction for actions between entities.

The memorandum provides for responsibilities for the state government, such as:

  • promote necessary actions to enable the identification of possible opportunities mapped by Petrobras in relation to the Offshore Wind pilot project;
  • verify alignment of the offshore wind pilot project with state programs and policies
  • act as a facilitating agent, supporting and speeding up the processes necessary for studies and research for the development and implementation of an Offshore Wind pilot project.

Politics: RN and Petrobras sign agreement to develop offshore wind energy

Governor Fátima Bezerra (PT) stated that the state is the largest producer of renewable energy on land and intends to maintain its leading role in the production of renewable energy “offshore”, that is, at sea.

“The partnership with Petrobras ensures that we will have the first pilot project for energy generation at sea in Brazil,” he said.

Fátima also pointed out that the moment represents a new cycle of investments that will generate economic growth with sustainability.

“The expansion of renewable energy is a path of no return. We are well inserted in this process and we will have a new cycle with offshore production and with Porto Indústria Verde that will support this process and even the generation of green hydrogen”, he pointed out.
