Rio – The Rio City Council approved the granting of the title of Honorary Citizen of Rio de Janeiro to Madonna last Thursday (25), just over a week before the big free concert that ends the pop diva’s tour, in Copacabana beach, next Saturday (4). The draft legislative decree was proposed by Cesar Maia and Carlo Caiado, both from the PSD, and approved in a second discussion.
In justifying the project, the councilors said that “Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, often referred to as the ‘Queen of Pop’, is the most successful female artist of all time, according to the Book of Records.”
“Madonna is known for her continuous reinvention and versatility in musical production, composition and visual presentation (…) Her works, which incorporate social, political, sexual and religious themes, have generated critical and public acclaim and controversy”, they described.
Cesar Maia and Carlo Caiado also stated the importance of the pop diva as an influence on other artists in the conception and production of their arts. The positive impact of the singer’s performance, in several aspects, in the city of Rio was also highlighted.
“His coming to Brazil not only attracts and directly impacts the economic, cultural and tourist growth of our city, but also offers a unique opportunity to celebrate one of the greatest artists of all time,” they added.
It is not yet known whether the singer will make room in her schedule to receive the honor. It is not necessary for her to go to Palácio Pedro Ernesto, headquarters of the City Council, to become an Honorary Citizen. The diploma can also be delivered anywhere, including at the Copacabana Palace, where Madonna will be staying.
