6-year-old girl falls off her bike and doctors perform surgery on the wrong leg

A six-year-old girl underwent surgery to install pins in her right leg, however, the procedure was carried out on the wrong leg, which had no fracture, while the correct leg was the left. The case occurred on Thursday night (25) at the Campina Grande (PB) Emergency and Trauma Hospital. The information is from UOL.

The entire surgical team was removed and the case is being investigated by the hospital, the CRM (Regional Council of Medicine) and the State Public Ministry. The family registered a police report at the Campina Grande Civil Police Flagrant Center.

The girl’s mother, Fernanda Oliveira, was shocked to see the error and is still shaken.

“At the time I despaired. I still don’t understand how this happened. Her leg was swollen, with a splint and a small window open to show the edema,” said Fernanda.

The daughter’s leg started to swell last weekend, after the child fell off her bicycle. Fernanda took her daughter to the hospital on Sunday (21). Imaging tests revealed a small fracture and fluid from an infection.

After hospitalization, more tests were carried out and surgery was scheduled. Fernanda says that the surgery lasted two hours and, at around 9pm, when her daughter returned from the surgical suite, she was informed that the procedure was over.

“When I lifted the sheet, I started screaming: ‘My God, what’s happening? What did they do?’. A nurse came running and asked what was happening. I said: ‘they operated on the wrong leg’. Then the doctor came, looked, and they took [a menina] back to the operating room to perform surgery on the right leg”, reported Fernanda.

Even after the error was corrected, Fernanda is still angry.

“It wasn’t just one person, it was a team! A lot of people didn’t realize which leg was sick? You don’t need to be a doctor to see the state she was in. Now my daughter has had both her legs operated on, and we don’t know what will happen from now on. She doesn’t even have a discharge forecast”, she lamented.

The Campina Grande Trauma Hospital stated that it took all measures to welcome the mother and her daughter, providing them with the necessary assistance, and that an investigation was opened to investigate the situation. The Paraíba MP and the CRM are also investigating the case, as is the Campina Grande Guardianship Council.
