Public hearing on Monday (29) discusses PI’s new environmental policy

Legislative Assembly of Piauí

A Legislative Assembly of Piauí (Alepi) will promote, on Monday (29), a public hearing to discuss the implementation of the Consumer and Environmental Protection Commission (CDCMA). The meeting will start at 9 am and will be held in the Alepi Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) room.

On the occasion, Bill No. 76, of November 8, 2023, Message 164, from the state government, which deals with the new state environmental policy and the repeal of the previous law, nº 4,854/96.

According to the text of the project, the State Environmental Policy aims to preservation, improvement and recovery of environmental quality in the territory of Piauíthe protection of the environment as an ecological, sociocultural and economic heritage of the people of Piauí, the encouragement of sustainable economic development practices, the protection of the dignity of human life and the defense of the well-being of sentient beings as subjects of rights.

The State Environmental Policy also provides for the following principles and guidelines:

  • State action in the control, inspection, surveillance and protection of the environment;
  • stimulation of scientific and technological development aimed at the rational use of environmental resources;
  • encouragement and stimulation of economic activities, enterprises and sustainable energy transition initiatives that reduce the global environmental impact in relation to climate change and the consumption and availability of environmental resources;
  • promotion of environmental education at all levels of education and through awareness and communication campaigns for society about their environmental rights and duties;
  • community participation in the formulation, execution and evaluation of environmental programs, projects and actions;
  • compatibility with other state and national public policies;
  • transparency and access to information;
  • adoption, by the state administration, of sustainable public purchasing practices and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions;
  • encouraging the adoption of habits, customs, attitudes and social and economic practices that are not harmful to the environment;
  • recovery of degraded areas aiming to reestablish environmental and ecosystem resources.
