The Bahia Geographic and Historical Institute (IGHB) has an exhibition of canvases from the 19th and 20th centuries, which have recently undergone restoration. The works portray figures from Bahian history such as Joana Angélica, Lord Cochrane and even D. Pedro II.

The restoration process consisted of fixing the polychromy, filling gaps, relining, chromatic reinstatement, chemical and mechanical cleaning of the paintings, making a chassis and new frame, in addition to applying protective varnish to the canvases.

The IGHB collection portrays facts and characters that took part in the social development of our people, consisting of almost 200 works, which portray figures from the Independence of Bahia and other historical personalities such as members of the Portuguese royal family, as well as counts, viscounts and barons from Recôncavo.

In addition, there are portraits of governors of Bahia, generals, knights and ladies from the colonial, imperial and republican periods, as well as Bahian intellectuals such as Rui Barbosa and Castro Alves.

The IGHB is open to free visitors from Monday to Friday, from 1pm to 5pm. A virtual tour of the collection is available on the website Institute.
