Food allowance for civil servants goes up to R$1,000 after agreement with government | Brazil

The federal government reached an agreement yesterday with public servants to increase food assistance for Executive categories. With no possibility of offering a salary adjustment in 2024, the Lula government’s solution was to readjust the benefit. The value now increases from R$658 reais to R$1,000 per month for servers. The increase, of 52%, will be paid from June onwards.

In the agreement, signed with representatives of different categories, it was also agreed to readjust health aid and daycare assistance, which will increase to R$ 215, in the case of health, and to R$ 484, in the case of pre-care assistance. school.

The Ministry of Management estimates that the increase in food assistance alone results in an income gain of more than 4.5% for more than 200,000 active employees – who are those who earn up to R$9,000 per month. Employees with the lowest salaries in the federal public service who simultaneously receive the three benefits (food, health and daycare) receive an increase in their total remuneration that reaches 23%.

The ministry also says that, in addition to adjustments to benefits, the government has also committed to implementing by July all specific career tables that have not yet been opened. Currently, there are 18 open tables, 10 of which have already reached agreements and eight are in progress.

The readjustment in benefits, however, should not end the education strike. Public universities and federal institutes have been at a standstill, some since March, demanding salary adjustments from the government. The Management portfolio offered a 9% increase for technicians and teachers, but only from January 2025, which was not accepted by the categories.
