All about Apple

Apple’s mixed reality (MR) glasses, the Apple Vision Pro, have begun to be used in medicine. And, last Thursday (18), the third surgery with the device was performed in the world. Guess where it was? In Brazil, more specifically in Santa Catarina.

The procedure performed was a video arthroscopy, which examines the internal structure of the body’s joints with a camera. It was carried out at the Jaraguá Hospital, in Jaraguá do Sul (SC). The patient recovered without any problems.

Orthopedic doctor Bruno Gobbato, in a statement, explained that the team is getting to know Vision Pro. “As it is a very new technology, we are still understanding how to make the most of it,” he said.

Brazilian surgery with Apple Vision Pro

  • In the Santa Catarina team’s first experience with Vision Pro, the video camera used in the surgery was mirrored on the glasses, leaving the image enlarged and better positioned so that the doctor could better assess the patient’s joints;
  • As video arthroscopy was the first with Vision Pro, this surgery involved only one screen, but Gobbato has already indicated that there are possibilities to go further in terms of visualization;
  • As the patient had a rotator cuff tear (one of the injured shoulder tendons), Apple’s MRI glasses gave Gobbato greater precision in visualizing the injury;
  • This allowed him to give a more accurate diagnosis;
  • In addition to camera mirroring, the doctor consulted 3D models as a reference and used the Notes app to consult patient exams, such as an MRI.

I remember that as soon as I arrived, in Jaraguá do Sul, in 2010, we performed the surgery on a 20-inch screen. Improvements in monitors allowed for better ergonomics and greater precision in steps.

With this new type of technology, not only can we greatly increase the size of the video screen, but it also allows us to use multiple screens with viewing from different angles in real time, and this allows for faster surgeries and much more. accurate.
