Public school teacher goes viral teaching punctuation to students with music

A public school teacher in Volta Redonda, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro, went viral on social media when she showed how she teaches punctuation through music to her 3rd year elementary school students. The video, published on Instagram on April 15, has already received more than 20 million views. (look above).

Carliene Gerald is 29 years old and has been a teacher for over a decade. Since 2021, she has taught at Escola Municipal Fernando de Noronha, in the Vila Brasília neighborhood.

The idea of combining music and education comes from a long time ago, when the teacher was still studying teaching.

“There was a lot of content. I already transformed the content into music and I learned more easily. When it came to taking the tests, it was easier”, he explained.

At the school where he works, before starting primary education, he studied early childhood education. And music was always present.

“Since early childhood education, I have been singing with the children. When I came to elementary school, I started with this habit. I decided to stay with this way of singing with the children, this more affectionate relationship with the children”, explained Carliene.

The teacher has been with the same class for three years. Since the 1st year of elementary school, when she started teaching students, she continued to use music as a learning tool. As it worked, she chose to maintain teaching.

“I started to notice that they started to really like these little songs. I followed this group from the first year to the second, we remained like that, from the second to the third, we also continued with the songs. In the third year the content becomes a little more complex and it’s like this: from the first to the second the content increases and from the second to the third it’s the same thing, already understanding that, after all, it’s the end of the literacy cycle”, she explained.

Carliene stated that the main idea is not just to sing, but to have “a playful moment where children can memorize the content more easily”.

“I always sing the songs with gestures. They are not isolated songs. There are always gestures, there is always a lot of fun. So that when the child remembers that content, they remember that song which was a cool song, a happy song. And besides to facilitate memorization, music has this power, melody has this power”, he commented.

“Sometimes, we go to a place, hear a little song and it gets stuck in our heads. With children, it’s the same thing. They listen to so many things, you know, so many songs, and then I thought it was working. It worked. It’s right to bring content that is a little more complex, not only in the Portuguese language, but also in other subjects, such as science, history and geography”, he added.

With more than 20 million views and more than 1 million likes, Carliene’s video reached actress Nanda Costa, who defined her as “wonderful”.

The post also has thousands of other comments praising the teacher’s teaching. She stated that she did not expect all this repercussion.

“I didn’t believe it. It was a shock, because my number of followers grew a lot. When I posted the video I had 26 thousand followers. In two days, I had already reached more than 150”, she said.

The number only went up. At the time of publishing this report, Carliene already had more than 225 thousand followers on Instagram.

At school, shortly after the viral incident, the teacher was greeted by her ecstatic students and asked a series of questions.

“The children came with a barrage of questions: ‘Auntie, how was it? I saw you. So, how was it? It was cool. Tell us. We saw you”, he recalled.

The moment was recorded and, of course, shared on the teacher’s Instagram. (watch below).

The affection Carliene received went beyond the school walls. The students’ families were delighted and valued the teacher’s work.

“The children’s families started to see it, they sent it to their families, and they were like this, in this euphoria. The mothers always supporting me, my family always supporting me, the teachers here at my school, my director, everyone always supporting me, encouraging”, he added

This was not the first video of the teacher that went viral on social media. On February 23, Carliene published another offering suggestions for teachers on how to combat dengue fever with pre-school and elementary school students through music.

The video already has more than 720 thousand reproductions. The teacher said that she couldn’t believe it when she realized the size of the repercussion.

“I cried a lot. I cried a lot, because I started to see other children from other schools singing. I thought: ‘Oh my God! What do you mean by a little song that I made so many years ago that students from other schools are singing?’. It was a feeling of something that I shared that was working in Brazil. Schools started posting in stories and tagging me. Then, I cried, cried, cried, cried…”, she recalled.

Trajectory in education

Carliene completed her teaching degree in 2012. She is currently studying pedagogy, with the expectation of graduating at the end of this year.

In 2013, she started her first job as a teacher. She was an educational assistant at a private daycare center, where she stayed for four months.

“I bathed the children a lot. I loved it! I stayed with the babies, I stayed with the little ones, I took the children out of swimming, put the children in for swimming”, he recalled.

Afterwards, Carliene took on her first class at a private school, staying there for nine years.

He left the institution in 2021, when he started teaching at Escola Municipal Fernando de Noronha. She was summoned by the city hall two years after being approved in a public competition.

“I love public schools. When you really understand the proposals, what they are willing to do, you fall in love. Here at the same school where I am, I have also worked in management, I was invited by my director. I worked in the management of the school for six months. This year, I’m just with my class in the morning and on the Saturday project at school, on Saturdays”, said the teacher.

Granddaughter of a conductor, and daughter and sister of music teachers, Carliene grew up in a musical environment. She sings in church with her husband and realized that this art would go very well with education.

“I see music as a tool, a tool for teachers. Music has the power to generate different feelings in us. There is music that we listen to that makes us sad. There is music that we listen to that makes us happy , which makes us excited. And using this tool in the classroom, I feel like I can reach a greater number of students”, he said.
