Representatives of the Movement of Huni Kuin artists (Mahku), from the Upper Juruá River region, in Acreparticipate in Italy in the 60th edition of the Venice Art Biennale. The collective created the most monumental and important work of the event on the facade of the 750-meter Central Pavilion.

The work represents the myth of Kapewë Pukeni, which means bridge alligator, ‘transporting the viewer to the myth of origin of the Huni Kuin, which tells a story about the intercontinental separation between the peoples and the consolidation of the Huni Kuin identity’.

“Kapewë Pukeni thus becomes a central image in strengthening ties between foreigners around the world and in the role of art as a means of resistance”, they highlight in a post on social media.

The group, formed by Ibã Huni Kuin, Kássia Borges, Acelino Tuin, Cleiber Bane, Pedro Maná, Yaka Huni Kuin, Rita Huni Kuin, Cleudo Txana Tuin, Isaka Huni Kuin, spent two months in Venice painting the wall.

“It’s a great pleasure. For us, it’s very important to be here because it’s the first time we’re performing and we’re not represented. We’re presenting ourselves to this world”,

highlighted Kássia Borges, one of the artists in the collective.

The Venice Biennale is the largest art exhibition in the world and for the first time it has a Brazilian as curator and highlights indigenous art. Adriano Pedrosa, director of the São Paulo Museum of Art, chose immigrants, expatriates, homosexuals and indigenous people, foreigners in their own land.

The theme, loosely translated, ‘Foreigners everywhere’ was chosen to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Venice Biennale, which started on Saturday (20). The edition features more than 300 works by artists from various regions of the world.
