A car carrying four people, including two children, was hit by a locomotive when it broke down on the railway line in Jaguaruna, in the south of Santa Catarina.

The city’s Volunteer Fire Department reported that the car, a Citroen C3 model, was hit as two women left the vehicle and removed the two children.

As a result of the impact, a 12-year-old girl suffered a suspected broken arm and one of the women was left with bruises on her body. The collision occurred around 11:30 am on Wednesday (24).

The company responsible for operating the railway line informed, in a note, that the driver of the car was reckless and that the location of the accident had adequate signage.

He also reiterated that the locomotive driver applied the correct safety measures, such as signaling a whistle and applying the brakes.

Check out the note from Ferrovia Tereza Cristina:

“An imprudence recorded on the morning of this Wednesday (24), serves as a warning to the population who live or transits in the vicinity of the railway line: the collision caused by a car in a train on the Tereza Cristina Railway (FTC), at a Level Crossing (PN) – at a road-rail crossing, in the municipality of Jaguaruna. The driver did not observe the railway vehicle approaching, even though it was a PN signposted in accordance with legislation and with good visibility.

The occurrence was a reckless act by the road driver, especially for violating the Brazilian Traffic Code, art. 212, which states that it is a very serious offense not to stop the vehicle before crossing the railway line. The same Code establishes that vehicles traveling on rails have the right of way as others, which requires the attention of road drivers, pedestrians and cyclists when approaching a railway crossing.

The railway conductor blew the whistle and applied the brakes, complying with all safety measures required by railway regulations. Property/Operational Security contacted public security entities. The Fire Department team provided first care to the driver and the other two occupants of the vehicle, who suffered minor injuries, and were taken to Jaguaruna Hospital.”
