Drivers traveling along Estrada Parque Núcleo Bandeirante (EPNB), close to the Riacho Fundo Viaduct, returned to traveling along the original lanes of the road, at the time of the Firefighters balloon, this week. The resumption of the original route occurs with the end of the last detour built for the road structure works.

The release marks the end of the topping phase – a backfilling service at the ends of the viaduct to level the loops to the road. The four slabs were completed and, at this stage of the work, the teams continue to dig the trenches. The closure of diversions on site aims to ensure more fluidity and organization in the flow of vehicles.

With an investment of R$22.3 million, the work generated 300 direct and indirect jobs and will benefit 100,000 drivers who pass through EPNB daily. Two underground lanes will serve as returns to serve both directions of the road, covering citizens traveling towards Samambaia and those wishing to go to Plano Piloto.

According to engineer Sandra Martins, responsible for carrying out the road work, the completed stage is important because it determines the fit of the new structure with the existing EPNB lanes. “The traffic intervention changed the route of those going to Plano Piloto or heading towards Samambaia and Taguatinga. Finishing this last fitting, we returned the highway to the axis it was before”, explains Sandra.

As with other GDF road works, the Riacho Fundo Viaduct will also use the trench construction technique. “This format makes traffic easier for drivers, because it will not disrupt the flow of these three original lanes of the highway. In this case, it does not cause interference to other drivers”, emphasizes Sandra.

In February, teams from the Department of Roads and Highways (DER-DF) removed the first detour and reopened the return route that runs from Riacho Fundo towards Samambaia and Plano Piloto.

Work on the underground structure continues in progress. “We are continuing the excavation part, stapling the soil”, explains the engineer. The technique consists of including clamps in the structure that anchor the mass of soil and rock, to avoid the risk of collapses and landslides. “After stapling, the next step is to include the iron mesh that will serve as a base for injecting the concrete”, explains the engineer.

How will it look

With the completion of the work, the balloon near the 21st Military Firefighter Group will be eliminated. The roundabout is currently used by drivers to access the administrative region and the Economic Development Area (ADE), in Águas Claras, and is often jammed at peak times.

The tracks will be 200 meters long each and will facilitate access to both Riacho Fundo and the Águas Claras ADE.

Rogério Corsino da Silva, 56 years old, is a sales representative and makes daily deliveries in the region in front of the construction site. He believes that the release will help ease traffic while the viaduct is not completed. “The entrance to that balloon is complicated, this is going to be a real hassle. When this is released here, it will be very good”, he hopes.

Iris Rodrigues de Souza, 22 years old, walks to the stop below the U-turn and says she spends a lot of time in the vehicle due to the traffic jam that forms there, especially during peak hours. “But, with the works, I think it will improve a lot. There is a lot of traffic here, especially at night. This type of action is important to make our lives easier,” she says.
