State deputy Gleice Jane (PT) tried to file a request to ask the state government for explanations about the destination that will be given to copies of the book “O Avesso da Pele”, collected from 75 state schools for analysis, as it allegedly contains excerpts considered inappropriate for students from 14 to 16 years old.

In the request presented after the votes, the deputy questions whether a technical analysis was carried out by education professionals to remove the book from schools. She also asks what will be done with the books, purchased with public resources.

Gleice Jane explained that the intention is not to have the book used again in the 75 state schools that had adopted it, but to clarify some points about the measure taken in MS and two other states and the importance of technical analysis. To this end, she compared: “Would you perform surgery with a professional who is not a doctor?”

State deputy Zé Teixeira (PSDB) said that he would be against the request and responded to the comparison made by his colleague. “I wouldn’t have surgery without seeing a doctor, but I also wouldn’t give my granddaughter this book, which should be for people over 21,” he said. “Family that educates; At school, it’s just knowledge.”

Gleice countered, saying that, while reading the book, she remembered countless cases she witnessed when she worked as a teacher, such as two teenagers aged 13 and 15, married, one of them, exploited by her family. She argued that the book discusses current issues that occur with girls and not after the age of 21.

At the end of the discussion, only deputies Roberto Hashioka (União Brasil), João Henrique Catan (PL), Zé Teixeira and Rinaldo Modesto (Podemos) were present.

Rinaldo was the one who provided the solution. He said that there was no longer a quorum for voting and proposed that questions be made through the Education Commission.

The copies received by the MEC (Ministry of Education) were collected by decision of the State Governor, Eduardo Riedel. According to SED, the book had already been sent to 75 of the 349 school units in MS.

On the publisher’s website, “O Avesso da Pele” is described as a novel about race relations, violence and blackness. Winner of the Jabuti award, it tells the story of Pedro, who, after the death of his father, murdered in a disastrous police raid, sets out to rescue his family’s past and retrace his father’s path.
