The Public Electoral Ministry asked the Regional Electoral Court of Alagoas to revoke the mandate of the governor of Alagoas, Paulo Dantas (MDB), and declare him ineligible for eight years for the alleged practice of abuse of political and economic power during the 2022 elections. According to the organization, the governor obtained an illicit advantage with a project to distribute basic food baskets during the election year. The Electoral MP also asked for the impeachment of the vice-governor, Ronaldo Lessa (PDT). The Government of Alagoas denies any irregularity.

According to the Electoral MP, Dantas designed the project to distribute basic food baskets and used government action as a campaign platform. The body claims that the governor violated rules set out in the elections law that prevent the free distribution of goods, values ​​or benefits by the Public Administration in an election year, except in cases of public calamity or state of emergency.

According to the Electoral MP, the governor’s conduct caused “irreparable damage to the balance of the 2022 electoral campaign”.

In a statement, the Government of Alagoas said that “the existence of a state program to protect people in vulnerable situations, through the delivery of basic food baskets, was something formalized by the Government of Alagoas in 2020”.

The State Attorney, Luís Vale, stated that the accusations of electoral use of the program are unfounded and that the electoral law ensures that pre-established projects can continue throughout the year, regardless of whether it is a campaign period.

“As there is an express provision in article 73 of Law No. 9,504/97, that the state of emergency is one of the exceptions to the characterization of prohibited conduct, the investigator, with no interest in her cause, in addition to asking that basic food baskets continue to be delivered, ends up recognizing the unenforceability of different conduct on the part of the Government of Alagoas”, he said.
