The public network unit will offer almost a thousand oncological procedures each month, including consultations, surgeries and chemotherapy sessions

The Government of Pará delivered this Tuesday (02), in Marabá, the Oncology wing of the Regional Hospital of Southeastern Pará “Dr. Geraldo Veloso” (HRSP). “This is a historic milestone for health in the South and Southeast of Pará. With the inauguration of this oncology center we are decentralizing care, and offering quality and excellent structures to the population in the interior of the State”, stated Governor Helder Barbalho.

“Our patients received humanized and quality care, without the need to travel to other regions. They will be close to their family members, which will certainly contribute to a better quality of life”, added the governor.

The new space has an area of 418 square meters (m²), which houses an office, a treatment room with 10 chairs for chemotherapy, 20 beds for hospitalization and an isolation bed. The unit will offer 380 oncology consultations monthly, covering specialties such as gynecology and mastology, 500 chemotherapy sessions and 110 oncological surgeries.

“We are proud to offer a modern space, equipped with the best for the population. We have expanded access to excellent oncology treatment in the region. It is an advance that reflects the State government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare to everyone”, highlighted Ivete Gadelha Vaz, Secretary of State for Public Health.

According to Flávio Marconsini, Executive Director of the unit, the space has a multidisciplinary team to help patients overcome treatment challenges. “Our care will be focused on humanization, seeking not only to treat the disease, but also to take care of the emotional and psychological well-being of patients,” he informed.

Treatment – The oncology ward of the Southeast Regional Hospital offered 500 chemotherapy sessions every month, a crucial treatment that uses drugs to combat cancer cells. These medications, also known as chemotherapeutic or antineoplastic agents, are administered in a variety of ways—in pills, intravenous injections, or infusions.

According to doctor Daiane Oliveira, Technical Director of the Hospital, chemotherapy attacks cancer cells at different stages of their growth and reproduction cycle. “Chemotherapy treatment helps to reduce the size of the tumor, control its growth or even eliminate it completely,” she added.

The doctor also highlighted that during chemotherapy it is common for patients to face side effects, such as nausea, hair loss and fatigue, which can vary according to the types of medication used and each person’s sensitivity. “We will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, which encompasses medical, psychological and nutritional support, essential to guarantee the well-being and quality of life of patients during treatment”, added the doctor.

First patient – On Monday (1st) the public health unit reached a significant milestone by carrying out its first oncological surgery. Patient Sebastiana da Cruz Ribeiro, 97 years old, resident in Marabá, underwent the “Breast Quadrantectomy” procedure, an intervention during breast cancer treatment.

“Ms. Sebastiana is a true example of resilience and strength. At 97 years old, she faces cancer with courage and determination, inspiring us all with her bravery. Her story is a living testimony that age is not an obstacle to the fight for life. We are honored to be able to provide her with the care and attention she deserves”, highlighted Governor Helder Barbalho.

Vaneide da Cruz Ribeiro, the patient’s daughter, said that three months ago her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, which was a big scare for the family due to her advanced age. However, everyone was relieved to be able to carry out the procedure in Marabá. “The surgery was a great success, thank God. My mother is fine. She was the first oncology patient treated at the Regional. It’s Wonderful! I hope that many people can enjoy this new space, just like my mother”, said Vaneide Ribeiro.

Analice de Amorim Ribeiro, 55 years old, also a resident of Marabá, is another patient who had a mastectomy at the institution. “This journey has been challenging, but I found strength in the solidarity of the Hospital team and the love of my family. Carrying out this procedure here in Marabá, avoiding traveling more than 500 km to the city where I had it before, is a great relief. This surgery not only symbolizes a battle against cancer, but also a rebirth for me,” said Analice.

“We are committed to providing the highest standard of care to our oncology patients. Our team is dedicated to providing not only excellent medical treatment, but also emotional and psychological support to ensure that each individual faces this journey with dignity and hope,” he added Assistant Director Alan Ferreira.

Profile – The Southeast Pará Regional Hospital belongs to the Government of Pará. It is managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa).

The unit is a reference for medium and high complexity procedures for more than 1 million people, in 22 municipalities in the region. It has 135 beds, of which 77 are for clinical and medical hospitalization units, and 38 for Intensive Care Units (ICUs) – Adult, Pediatric and Neonatal.
