His health condition is stable.

“The patient remains under continuous monitoring in the institution’s Semi Intensive Unit, undergoes intense physiotherapy sessions and his health status remains stable”, states the health unit.

After surrendering, the kidnapper, Paulo Sérgio de Lima, 29, told the police that he was fleeing the city because he was threatened by a criminal faction. According to him, when he boarded, he thought he had been discovered and shot after mistaking a passenger for a police officer.

On March 12, 16 passengers were taken hostage for 3 hours on a bus at Rio Bus Station. The criminal fired shots, and two people were injured, one of them seriously.

BOPE, the elite Military Police troop, was called in to negotiate the surrender. Paulo Sérgio de Lima, 29 years old, ended up turning himself in and was arrested.

All 16 hostages were freed without injury and later treated by the Fire Department. Among them, there was a mother with a child and six elderly people.

Paulo Sérgio told the police that he thought the vehicle was being surrounded by police when it stopped at the bus station. He stated that he was scared, as he was fleeing from drug traffickers. When one of the passengers returned to the vehicle, he said he thought it was a police officer and that he was going to be arrested.

Paulo said he pulled out the gun, according to him, to surrender. But the passenger returning to the bus got scared and ran. At that moment, Paulo said he fired and ended up hitting another passenger, Petrobras employee Bruno Lima da Costa, 34 years old. The passenger who ran was hit by shrapnel, treated at the scene and released.

Delegate Mário Andrade, head of the 4th DP, stated that the criminal informally said that he worked for drug trafficking in Muzema and went to Rocinha, on Sunday (10), where he had debts with local bars.

According to the police chief, he said he ended up having a disagreement with a drug dealer, whom he shot.

“Paulo said that, then, this criminal shot at him, missed. He retaliated and hit the drug dealer. After that, he fled Rocinha and hid in hotels in the city”, explained the police chief.

Afraid of possible reprisal from drug traffickers, he spent the next two days hiding in hotels. On the 12th, he would go to Minas Gerais to take shelter in a family home.

Paulo Sérgio bought the bus ticket to Juiz de Fora (MG) shortly before 2pm – and paid in cash. TV Globo obtained images from the internal security circuit of the moment he buys the ticket (see below).
