The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) inaugurated this Tuesday (2) its mathematics course bachelor in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation. Called IMPA Tech, This is the first degree program offered by the research center.
The course has four years duration. After a year and a half of basic subjects (see the curriculum here), students must choose between four emphases: Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or Data Science. The inaugural master class will take place this Wednesday (3), starting the academic year.
The degree program will take place in full time with face-to-face classes at the IMPA Tech headquarters, in Rio de Janeiro. It is located in Porto Maravalley, a region of the capital that began construction in 2022, with the aim of attracting companies and technology and innovation centers – in other words, being the Brazilian “Silicon Valley”.
IMPA Tech is a free course, financed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and Ministry of Education (MEC). Students over 18 years old can live in student accommodation. According to the institute, graduation will receive an investment of R$18.7 million for the year 2024.

Expectations for the course are high. Founded in 1952, the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics It is one of the main research centers in Brazil – and one of the most important in mathematics in the world. He already has master’s and doctoral programs, in addition to being the organizer of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP).
Selective process
Registration took place at the end of 2023. Unlike others entrance exams, IMPA Tech did not just take into account the grade in a test. The first stage of the selection considered students’ performance in mathematics in Enem or in five knowledge Olympiads: OBMEP, OBM (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad), OBF (Brazilian Physics Olympiad), OBQ (Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad) and OBI (Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad). One hundred places were offered in the first semester: 20 for Enem participants, and 80 for medalists from the Olympics mentioned above. Half of the places are allocated to public school students. In addition, IMPA Tech reserves a portion of vacancies for female and affirmative quotas (self-declared black, brown, indigenous, quilombola and people with disabilities candidates).

The second phase of the selection process included group activities and interviews with candidates. The prerequisite for enrolling is to have completed high school.
