The former federal deputy Almerinda Filgueiras de Carvalho
was arrested by the Federal Police (PF), this Monday (1st), for the crimes of money laundering and passive corruption. The arrest was carried out in São João de Meriti (RJ), in Baixada Fluminense.
The arrest is part of the PF’s Operation Sanguessuga, which investigates a scheme involving deputies and businessmen who rigged bids for the acquisition of ambulances in city halls in at least 20 states in Brazil. The arrest warrant was issued by the 7th Court of the Federal Justice Section, in Mato Grosso, on the 25th.
Currently 72 years old, Almerinda held the position of municipal secretary of Social Assistance, Human Rights and Racial Equality at São João de Meriti city hall, where she was arrested. Almerinda was a federal deputy between 1999 and 2007.
The former parliamentarian was taken to the Federal Police Station in Nova Iguaçu for the usual procedures.
From there, Carvalho will be sent to the Legal Medical Institute for a forensic examination, and later to the state prison system, where she will remain at the disposal of the Justice Department, as reported by the PF. She faces up to nine years in prison.
