“Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin (1898-1937) occupies a special place in world music: the composition introduced jazz to classical music audiences and made its author a star. In celebration of 100 years of Gershwin’s song, a show will be held at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro next Monday, April 1st, 7pm, which will bring together names such as Wilson Simoninha, the Orquestra Sinfônica Juvenil Carioca (OSJC), the pianist Moana Martins, among others. Conducted by maestros Priscila Bomfim and Carlos Sarria, the musical script intertwines American and Brazilian music, starting with excerpts from the musical “Chicago” and works by George Gershwin such as “I got plenty” and the famous “Rhapsody in blue”, performed by pianist Hércules Gomes, an artist known for moving between popular and classical music with the same excellence.

Angelica de la Riva

“Jazz – 100 years of Rhapsody in Blue” has tickets at popular prices – R$10 and R$5 (half price). The opening of the program is the young trumpeter Isaac Carvalho Silva, 12 years old, member of OSJC, and soprano Angélica de la Riva, a Brazilian living in Spain with an international career. Angélica was already a soloist in the concert that the Chiquinha Gonzaga Youth Symphony Orchestra held in Madrid, in November 2022, at Casa de América.

In the second part of the program, Hércules performs “Samba do Morro”, a work by Brazilian Radames Gnattali, which combines the language of jazz with the Brazilian rhythm of samba – piano, orchestra and percussion from the samba school form the link between jazz and our Brazilian music. To compose the third part of the concert, singer Wilson Simoninha will be on stage to perform MPB classics accompanied by the sound of a symphony orchestra. The program closes with “Aquarela do Brasil” and “Trenzinho Caipira”, by Villa-Lobos in an arrangement by Nelson Ayres, symbolizing the greatness of our country.

The show is sponsored by Santander Brasil, Zurich Santander and Instituto Cultural Vale, through the Federal Culture Incentive Law. And it has support from the State Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of Rio de Janeiro and Fundação Theatro Municipal.
