This Monday (1/4), marks 60 years since the coup d’état that plunged Brazil into more than two decades of obscurantism. To remember the period, which was marked by total disrespect for fundamental rights and guarantees, CUT-DF and several civil society organizations are carrying out activities next week.

Entitled “60 years of 64, dictatorship never again!”, the action will begin on April 1st, with an event at Praça Zumbi dos Palmares, at Conic, starting at 4:30 pm. Then, at 7pm, a debate on the topic will take place at the Central headquarters, also at Conic.

“The idea is to remember this regrettable period in the history of Brazil, so that something like this never happens again, especially after the recent attempts to attack democracy, which we witnessed with regret”, highlighted the secretary of Human Rights and Social Policies at CUT- DF, Cleber Soares.

The actions continue on Tuesday (2/4), with a solemn session celebrating democracy, in the Federal Senate. The debate is proposed by the mandate of senator Randolfe Rodrigues (No Partido-AP), and will take place at Espaço Ivandro Cunha Lima, starting at 10am.

In the evening, at 7pm, the Dom Bosco Sanctuary, on Quadra 702 Sul, will celebrate mass in memory of those who disappeared during the dictatorship.

The coup of 64

On April 1, 1964, the Brazilian democratic process was interrupted by the civil-military coup. The then democratically elected president, João Goulart, was deposed by the military, who took over the government. The period known as military dictatorship began.

Considered a great Brazilian political tragedy, the coup was marked by authoritarianism, violence, oppression and persecution of opponents of the regime, in addition to total disrespect for human, labor and social rights.

In just over two decades, thousands of people have been arbitrarily arrested and tortured number that has not yet been fully calculated. Hundreds more were killed by law enforcement agencies, and many of them remain missing. Even today, family members struggle to search for and identify the victims of the dictatorship.

But the period was also marked by the struggle and resistance of movements for the redemocratization of the country. Tirelessly, popular leaders, student unions, party unions and others have spared no effort to reestablish democracy, and continue to fight against any attempt at democratic rupture.
