Last Tuesday (26/03), the Rio de Janeiro City Council approved, in the 2nd discussion, the extension of the validity period of the quota and vacancy system for black and indigenous people for another 10 years in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
The bill, number 2,797/2024 and authored by the Executive Branch, is now undergoing analysis by Mayor Eduardo Paes, who is expected to sanction it.
According to City Hall, since it was implemented by Law 5,695/2014, the measure has led to an increase in the percentage of black and indigenous people in Rio’s public service, contributing to the fight against ethnic, racial, religious and gender discrimination in the city.
”The quota law is a historic reparation for thousands of people who have been made invisible in our country. It is essential to have black and indigenous men and women in the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in the inspection sector, at the highest level of municipal public service, giving a new look to the city’s needs”says councilor Edson Santos (PT).
