The Goiás Military Fire Department (CBMGO) officially launches this Wednesday (27) Operation Holy Week 2024, to guarantee the safety of Goiás residents during the religious holiday. The operation begins with the traditional Fogaréu Procession, in the city of Goiás, and continues until April 1st, at 8 am, covering the entire state.

The objective is not only to act in emergency situations, but also to prevent occurrences through educational and inspection actions. During Operation Semana Santa, military firefighters will be inspecting facilities and structures that may pose risks to public safety.

In addition, awareness-raising activities and the distribution of educational materials will be carried out, seeking to guide the population on safety measures in traffic, resorts, rivers, lakes and in crowded places.

Operation Holy Week

One of the firefighters’ main concerns in this operation is the prevention of drownings. Drowning is one of the main causes of death from accidents in Brazil, and often occurs silently, without fanfare or visible signs.

It is a death that can be avoided with simple measures and basic care, especially in places where there are no lifeguards present. It is important that people are aware of danger signs around bodies of water, such as rivers, lakes and swimming pools, and that they follow safety guidelines, such as not swimming in unfamiliar places or without the presence of lifeguards, consume alcoholic beverages before entering the water, and use life jackets, especially in water activities.

During Operation Semana Santa last year, in 2023, CBMGO recorded 1,971 occurrences, including traffic accidents, drownings and other emergencies. The operation also resulted in 32 deaths, four of them due to drowning.

In total, seven cases of drowning were attended to during the long holiday. In addition, CBMGO provided assistance in 306 traffic accidents, with emphasis on 28 road accidents.

Awareness of the risks and the adoption of preventive measures are essential to avoid tragedies and ensure everyone’s safety during the Holy Week period. Public collaboration is essential for the success of the operation, and raising awareness about the importance of preventing accidents can save lives.

During Operation Semana Santa, the Military Fire Department of the State of Goiás (CBMGO) counts on the support of the press to disseminate preventive measures and safety guidelines to the population.

Partnership with media outlets is essential to expand the reach of information on traffic precautions, drowning prevention and other important guidelines to ensure a safe holiday for everyone. The collaboration of the press is essential to disseminate this information and raise awareness among the population about the importance of adopting preventive measures during Holy Week.
