A plantain (Plantago major) has been widely used since ancient times to treat a wide range of health problems, including constipation, coughs and wounds.

Originally from Europe, this plant has healing, antipyretic, antitussive, anti-infectious, anti-hemorrhagic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, laxative, astringent and hemostatic properties, confirmed by recent research.

Plantain leaves can be used as a home remedy, both in the form of an ointment and tea.

The plant is used to treat sore throats, respiratory diseases, coughs, mouth ulcers, tonsillitis, urinary infections, diarrhea, heartburn, among other conditions. Due to its healing and coagulating properties, plantain is also widely used to cure boils.

Medicinal properties of plantain

The main active compounds in plantain include iridoids, mucilages and flavonoids, which give the plant its antioxidant effect. Aucubin is responsible for antimicrobial, analgesic and anti-inflammatory action, while allantoin helps in skin regeneration, making the plant useful as an astringent, fluidifier and emollient.

Because it decongests the respiratory tract, plantain is widely used to treat flu and colds. The leaves, rich in calcium, minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin K, can be useful in treating cuts, wounds and boils on the skin. Plantain can also be consumed in salads, soups and other dishes.

A study tested extracts from different parts of plantain against different types of cancer cells, showing that the seeds had greater antiproliferative activity, that is, they were effective in inhibiting the growth of tumor cells.

Although some manufacturers claim that plantain leaves help “cleanse and detoxify” the body, there is no research to confirm these claims.

There are several plantain-based products in health food stores and compounding pharmacies. For those who prefer to consume the leaves fresh, they are easily found in open-air markets or can be consumed in the form of tea.

Medicinal Applications of Plantain

Plantain can be used in several ways to treat different conditions:

– Colds, flu and gastrointestinal inflammations: Consume one to two glasses of plantain tea per day.

– Boils and pimples: Apply an ointment made from plantain to the affected area to take advantage of its anti-inflammatory action.

– Burns: Chew a handful of macerated plantain leaves, apply to the burn and cover with a bandage made from fresh leaves.

– Wounds and cuts: Apply a compress of macerated plantain leaves to the affected area, after washing it with plantain tea.

– Mouth ulcers, sore throat and inflammation: Gargle or rinse your mouth with plantain tea three to four times a day.

Side effects and contraindications

Plantain can cause side effects such as drowsiness, colic and dehydration. It is not recommended for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and people with cardiovascular problems.

Therefore, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before using plantain for treatment.
