The 16th Health Region (RS) confirmed this Thursday (25) that the 57-year-old patient from Apucarana, who contracted oropouche fever, died on April 15. The agency is now investigating the case to confirm the cause of death. (Watch interview below)

The diagnosis was confirmed by the Apucarana Municipal Health Authority (AMS), after a “sentinel test” at the State Central Laboratory (Lacen), which is periodically used to sample blood from patients. Now, Paraná has six records of the disease.
“The cause of death of this patient is still being investigated, so there is no way to confirm whether he was a victim of oropouche fever”, informs the health secretary of Apucarana, Emídio Bachiega.
According to Bachiega, what is known so far is that the patient was a self-employed commercial representative and traveled frequently to the state of Santa Catarina. “He even returned from one of these trips on April 11, 4 days before seeking medical care in Lagoão. With these data, there is a probability that the case was imported, that is, the disease was not contracted in Apucarana”, ponders Bachiega.
This Thursday morning (25), a meeting at the 16th Health Region of Apucarana discussed the measures that will be taken. The head of the 16th RS, Marcos Costa, stated that the region has now started an investigation to confirm whether he really died due to oropouche fever or another disease. The first information, according to him, is that the man had no comorbidities.
“We are investigating this death to verify whether the cause was really ursopouche. Therefore, this meeting today (Thursday), with technicians from the region and the municipality. He was in Santa Catarina. This disease traditionally comes from the North of the country, Amazonas, Roraima and Pará, where it is more concentrated. However, we have five cases already confirmed in Paraná, all imported. So, we are now embarking on the investigation to check whether he was actually traveling or not,” he said.
He is a resident of Apucarana and has ties to California, where he was buried. The patient’s name was not released.
He presented symptoms typical of arboviruses, leading health professionals to suspect dengue. However, more detailed examinations revealed the presence of the oropouche fever virus in his body.
The positive result of a patient, suspected of having contracted dengue, was confirmed on Wednesday (24) by Lacen.
What is it
Oropouche fever, transmitted mainly by mosquitoes of the Culicoides genus, is an acute febrile illness with symptoms similar to dengue fever, making accurate diagnosis essential for adequate treatment and control of spread.
Isolated cases and outbreaks have been reported in Brazil, mainly in states in the Amazon region.
Oropouche Fever is transmitted mainly by mosquitoes. After biting an infected person or animal, the virus remains in the mosquito’s blood for a few days. When this mosquito bites another healthy person, it can transmit the virus to them.
The symptoms of Oropouche Fever are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya: headache, muscle pain, joint pain, nausea and diarrhea.
The diagnosis of Oropouche Fever is clinical, epidemiological and laboratory.
There is no specific treatment. Patients must remain at rest, with symptomatic treatment and medical monitoring.
