The councilor’s husband Sister Cassiane (PCdoB), Rafael Almeida, was shot during a disturbance with the team of another parliamentarian in a square in Paulista, city of Greater Recife (PE). The person who fired the shot would have been the security guard of fellow councilor Marcelly da Aquarela (Republicans). The victim was rescued and taken to a health unit.

The case happened this Wednesday, 24th, in Praça Sebastião Gomes de Melo. According to information released by Pernambuco Diary, the security guard shot Rafael after being intimidated with a knife. Images of the confusion, which was reportedly motivated by political disagreements, are circulating on social media. In the videos, the victim appears holding the injured leg.

Rafael was rescued and taken to the Miguel Arraes State Hospital, located in the municipality. O Earth contacted the Civil Police to find out if the case is being investigated, but has not yet received a response.

What the parties say

On her Instagram profile, Marcelly da Aquarela published a video stating that she was ‘appalled’ by the situation. “We have a project, which I also support, which is the Zumba class, for health prevention in our neighborhood. We have the Permit, authorized by the Executive Branch of the city of Paulista, by the City Hall. […] As people arrived, they came across a chain and a padlock on the court gate. So, a collaborator decided to break this lock so that the class could take place”, he explained.

“Seu Rômulo is a military police officer. He is trained, he is qualified, he is also a public agent and ready to deal with scenes of violence. As soon as he breaks the lock, councilwoman Cassiane appears,” he says.

Still according to her, councilor Cassiane arrived accompanied by her husband and father, with physical and verbal violence. “With swearing, committing physical violence, pushing, punching, kicking. Something that is not a role, no example of a public agent here in the city”, commented the parliamentarian.

“We are not there to wage political war. The public space has to win, it belongs to the people. There is no owner there, there is no president of the association, there are no councilors there, but the population deserves respect,” he said.

Also on her profile, councilor Cassiane claimed that she was also attacked and asked for justice. “I was attacked too, I was hit twice. A man who is capable of punching a woman twice, using his physical aggression against a woman, he is capable of doing anything. In fact, he was armed when he got there”, she began.

According to her, she also has a project called “Movimento Saúde” with zumba and physical education classes and that her parliamentary colleague is only appearing because it is “election year”. She pointed out that when she arrived at the scene to set up the sound equipment, Rômulo had said that he had ‘killed a lot of people’ and that Rafael, who was shot, had asked for calm.

“And he took it and said: ‘I’ve killed a lot of people, killing one or two today doesn’t make any difference’. He pulled out the gun and fired the first shot. And then he missed the first shot. The second shot he got, he pointed the gun at Rafael and fired the second shot. He hit him in the leg and he is shot in the Red Wing, at Miguel Arraes Hospital”, said the councilor.

She also highlighted that the shooter deserves to be arrested and asked for prayers for her husband.
