New York’s highest court this Thursday (25) annulled the 2020 rape conviction of Harvey Weinstein, a former American film mogul whose sexual assaults against women motivated the start of the MeToo movement. Now, a new trial must be made on the case.

The court considered that the judge who sentenced Weinstein harmed the businessman by including statements from witnesses who were not part of the action in the process. The information comes from the Associated Press news agency.

The accusations against Weistein began in 2017, when a group of women reported sexual assaults committed by the Hollywood mega-producer. Other women followed the movement and began sharing stories of abuse using the MeToo hashtag on social media.

Weinstein is 72 years old. The annulled conviction, which established 23 years in prison, referred to two cases: first-degree sexual assault for performing forced oral sex on former production assistant Mimi Haleyi, in July 2006, and third-degree rape of the former actress Jessica Mann, in March 2013.
