Last Tuesday morning (23/4), the Board of Directors of the Development Bank of Minas Gerais (BDMG) decided, in a meeting, to close the Instituto Cultural Banco de Desenvolvimento de Minas Gerais (BDMG Cultural), the cultural arm of financial institution.

In an internal communication passed on to employees to whom the State of Minas had access, the council – formed by the president and vice president, respectively, Wagner Lenhart and Welerson Cavalieri, and four other representatives – determined the beginning of the “transition to promote the dissolution of the Instituto Cultural Banco de Desenvolvimento de Minas Gerais – BDMG Cultural”.

The text adds that, from now on, measures will be taken to comply with the decision and developments will be informed in due course. The report contacted the BDMG press office, but did not receive a response until the publication of this text.

The decision to extinguish BDMG Cultural was taken two days before the opening of Iago Marques’ solo exhibition, which inaugurates the institute’s 2024 Exhibition Cycle. Artists mobilize to demonstrate in favor of the entity at the opening this Thursday (25/4), at 6pm.

Rumors suggest that the Ouro Preto Arts Foundation (FAOP), a unit of the Minas Gerais State Department of Culture and Tourism (Secult), will take over part of the cultural institute’s responsibilities. The secretariat, however, did not respond when asked about the matter.

Created at the end of 1988 by the then president of BDMG, Carlos Alberto Teixeira de Oliveira, BDMG Cultural established itself as a multidisciplinary space to promote, record and disseminate cultural processes in Minas Gerais. The inauguration of the institute was marked by an exhibition of works by Alberto da Veiga Guignard and performances by the Minas Gerais Lírico Choir and Grupo Uakti.

Last year, during a show celebrating 35 years of BDMG Cultural, at Palácio das Artes, the public reacted with boos to a video sent by governor Romeu Zema (Novo) to mark the celebration. The collective demonstration lasted exactly as long as the video. As soon as it ended, when a new video was announced, this time about the history of the cultural institution, there was a storm of applause.

Currently, BDMG Cultural has 13 employees, including president – former state deputy Gustavo Miter (PSD) held the position, but took leave to run for mayor of Itaúna.
