A group of scientists has created a vaccine that can protect humans against various strains of coronavirus, a type of virus that, in 2019, manifested itself through Sars-Cov-2, responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic.

The experimental vaccine, tested on mice, prepares the immune system to target proteins that are compatible with the various types of coronavirus viruses.

“This takes us towards our goal of creating vaccines before a pandemic even starts”, highlights Rory Hills, researcher at the University of Cambridge.

In collaboration with the universities of Cambridge and Oxford and the California Institute of Technology, the development of the respective vaccine also proved to be effective against Sars-Cov-1, the agent that caused the pandemic that occurred between 2002 and 2004.

Mark Howarth, the lead author of the research, highlighted the “excellent work” of scientists who quickly produced vaccines against Covid-19 during the outbreak, but stresses the importance of producing vaccines before a pandemic occurs due to the large number of deaths. than the latest pandemic that the recent pandemic has caused.
