(ANSA) – Lombardy, the most populous region of Italywant to recruit nurses in South America to compensate for staff shortages in its healthcare system.

The Secretary of Social Welfare of the Lombard government, Guido Bertolaso, will even carry out a mission in Argentina and Paraguay to try to attract between 400 and 500 professionals by the end of 2024.

“We hope to get these 500 more nurses to provide a better response to our citizens”, explained Governor Attilio Fontana, from the right-wing League party, run by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.

“The strategy is to respond with utmost urgency to the personnel shortages that I have been denouncing for years. These hires would allow us to overcome the most critical moment of our region’s needs,” he added.

With 10 million inhabitants, Lombardy is Italy’s main productive and industrial hub and is home to the country’s “financial capital”, Milan, as well as important cities such as Bergamo and Brescia, which are among the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. . (ANSA)
