Fiocruz Minas, in partnership with the Municipal Health Department of Belo Horizonte (SMSA-BH) and the Ministry of Health, begins, this Tuesday (2/4), a study that will monitor people who have been diagnosed with Covid -19 and developed sequelae after infection. This is the Fiocruz Vita Monitoringwhich aims to characterize the immunological and hematological profile of patients, verifying changes in the immune system and blood due to the disease, as well as tissue damage, and the relationship of these changes with post-covid conditions.

“Post-covid conditions are symptoms that remain or appear from four weeks after Covid-19 infection, such as changes in smell and taste, tiredness, weakness, cough, mood changes, hair loss, difficulty concentrating. , between others. Although there have been advances in understanding epidemiology and the factors that contribute to sequelae, much information still needs to be better understood and, therefore, monitoring these patients is essential. Furthermore, some conditions persist for months after the initial infection, requiring adequate treatment”, explains researcher Rafaella Fortini, coordinator of the study.

Thus, in addition to monitoring post-covid conditions through laboratory tests, research participants will undergo multidisciplinary treatment, which will be carried out by SMSA-BH teams, through a pre-determined flow. The data generated during the study will help managers and health bodies to define care, diagnosis and treatment protocols for post-covid conditions.

To participate

Children over the age of five and adults of any age can participate in the research. Participants must live in Belo Horizonte and not have been admitted to an ICU/CTI in need of ventilatory support. Those interested in participating must fill out the online form on the Fiocruz Minas website. After filling out, the team at the Fiocruz Vita Monitoring will be in touch to inform you of the next steps.

The researchers will monitor the participants for 18 months, through face-to-face meetings, which will take place at the Carlos Prates Health Center. In total, there will be five consultations, the first one for the inclusion of participants in the study and then four more at 1 month, 3, 6 and 12 months after the first meeting. “Within 12 months, we will analyze the relationships of these blood markers with post-covid conditions. But the monitoring will last up to 18 months, to check whether the treatment was completed, whether the person was cured or whether there are still any complaints. This way, we will have a complete profile of the participants’ conditions”, says Fortini.
