It is impossible to talk about classics Mercedes-Benz without thinking about Class G. The muscular German utility vehicle, presented to the public for the first time in 1979, continues to be sold to this day, and has already exceeded 500 thousand units manufactured. However, what draws the attention of the consumer (and the competition, for that matter) is its great durability.
According to Michael Schiebe, CEO of AMG and head of sales of the G-Class, around 80% of the SUVs made are still on the road today, a very large percentage. This translates into at least 400,000 of the 500,000 G-Classes already manufactured to this day still in service. “Our cars have a very long useful life,” said Schiebe.

“So here you can calculate that, although maybe a G-Class takes a little more material than a compact car to produce, I think you’re going to have to drive many, many compact cars, in some cases, to achieve the same useful life of a G-Class”, concluded the CEO. This feat doesn’t just happen within Mercedes, since, according to Porsche, 70% of the 911s made to date are still on the road.
Electric Mercedes G-Class has 588 hp
However, Mercedes did not stop reinventing the robust model. Recently, the brand presented its fully electric version, the G580 EQ. The model has four engines with 588 hp and an excellent 118.6 mkgf of torque. This contributes to a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 4.7 seconds.
Ultimately, the new electric G-Class can “reach customers who haven’t been attracted to it in the past,” Schiebe said. However, to the delight of purists, the gasoline G-Class will continue to be offered. In addition, there is also the powerful AMG version, with the already familiar V8 engine.
