Brazil opens 244,315 formal jobs in March, well above expectations

São Paulo (Reuters) – Brazil opened 244,315 formal job vacancies in March, according to the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged), released this Tuesday (30) by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

The result was well above the expectations indicated in research by Reuterswith a net creation of 188,000 jobs, and also strongly surpassed the reading seen in March 2023, when 195,171 formal vacancies had been opened, according to the unadjusted series.

For March, the data was the strongest since 2010 (+266,415), also according to unadjusted data.

However, the positive balance in March still represented a slowdown compared to the 306,708 jobs created in February, according to adjusted data.

In the first three months of the year, the country opened 719,033 formal jobs in net terms, much more than the balance of 536,869 in the same period of the previous year, according to the adjusted series.

There was a positive balance of vacancies in four of the five major groups of economic activities last month, with emphasis on services, a sector that opened 148,722 jobs. There were creation of 37,493 formal jobs in commerce, 35,886 in industry and 28,666 in the construction sector.

Agriculture, however, closed last month with a negative balance of 6,457 jobs. According to the Ministry of Labor and Employment, the sector felt the impact of job losses in apple, soy and orange cultivation.

Last month, positive employment balances were recorded in 25 of the 27 federative units. São Paulo led the ranking, in absolute terms, with a net creation of 76,941 jobs, while Alagoas came in last place after closing 9,589 jobs.

The real average salary for admission in March in Brazil was R$2,081.50, with little variation compared to the February value (R$2,086.75).
