The president of the Central Bank (BC), Roberto Campos Neto, promised this Wednesday, 3, to contribute to making his succession happen in the “smoothest possible way”. He also defended that the hearing in the Senate with the nominee to occupy the position from January to take place, for practical reasons, this year.

“I’m going to make the transition as smooth as possible. I understand that it’s good to do the hearing this year. Otherwise, it goes to the next year and then there’s a problem because my mandate ends on the 31st. If a director is interim president, he has We have to go through a hearing as well, but then Congress will be closed for recess”, declared Campos Neto during his participation in a Bradesco BBI forum.

He considered that, as the decisions in the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) have been unanimous – therefore indicating an alignment between the directors -, the risk premium in the market due to the change in BC command has decreased significantly.

When talking about the challenges of the position, Campos Neto stressed that “the most important thing” for those who sit in the BC chair is to have the firmness to say no when necessary. “It will be necessary, it always is at some point, to say no,” said the BC president.

“The cycles are different, desires will be different, understandings of what is good will be different. So, it is important to have the firmness to say no, and explain, inside and outside, that the biggest problem is inflation The best economic plan is to have low and stable inflation”, reinforced the BC president.
