Launched in March 2024, the first season of X-Men ’97 quickly turned into one of the biggest Marvel phenomenons of recent years. A direct sequel to the 1990s animation, the series proved that there is a way to modernize plots and aesthetics from the past, presenting new events that respect the audience’s intelligence.
After many twists and turns, some important sacrifices and losses and the revelation of new villains, the season will come to an end on May 15th. X-Men ’97: what to expect from the last episode?
The last chapter will have the difficult task of overcoming the tragic moments that marked the end of Part 2. In it, we see Cable apparently murdering Jean Gray and a moment in which the X-Men fight each other. Divided between Magneto and Professor X, the mutants end up having their loyalties tested as they continue to face armies of sentinels.
One of the episode’s most shocking moments happens when, after being punched by Wolverine, Magneto uses his powers to remove the adamantium from the hero’s body. The event follows events that took place in 1993 in the comics and which had very impactful results for the entire Marvel universe.

Logan survives, but the situation ends up overloading his healing factor and causing the character’s wildest side to be awakened. At the same time, Magneto’s actions cause Professor X to break his oath not to kill and erase the mind of his former villain. This ends up generating the villain Massacrewhich destroyed part of the publisher’s universe.
Final chapter holds surprises
While Wolverine may survive, Jean Grey’s fate is more uncertain. She ends up being defeated by Cable on the psychic plane, which decreases her chances of survival. At the same time, her connection with the Phoenix Force can be explored, giving the character a new chance, as well as a powerful ally for the X-Men.
In addition to having to resolve their issues with Magneto, the heroes will also have to deal with Mister Sinister and Bastion, in what promises to be an epic fight — and at least one of them must live to fight again in the future. What seems certain is that the events will leave many scars on the mutants and establish new narrative lines and group formations that should be explored in the second season, already confirmed by Disney.
