The end of Tropical paradisewhen the soap opera was shown for the first time, in 2007, it even affected Lula’s government, who was also President of the Republic at that time. The soap opera is being rerun on Vale a Pena Ver de Novo and ends next Friday (3).

17 years ago, the Federal Government was concerned with the showing of the last chapter of the soap opera, broadcast on September 28, 2007. The revelation of Taís’s (Alessandra Negrini) killer would attract all the attention and, therefore, millions of people would tune in at the same time.

According to a report by Gazeta do Povo at the time, the problem was not the large number of people with televisions connected to the soap opera, but the sudden increase in energy consumption when the plot ends and many electrical appliances are turned on at the same time.

Therefore, the National Electric System Operator (ONS), a body linked to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), took precautionary measures to avoid a blackout in Brazilian homes. To support peak consumption, an energy reserve was used to meet demand.

The procedure is the same as that adopted in the World Cup. When the sudden increase in energy happens not only after the match, but also between the first and second half. In those 15 minutes, the fan uses the free time to turn on the lights in the house and turn on other devices.

Something similar happened five years later, with the ending of Avenida Brasil (2012). In addition to the ONS action, the outcome of the plot mobilized the country so much that Fernando Haddad, then a candidate for mayor of São Paulo, postponed a rally he would hold with President Dilma Rousseff that night.

Last chapter of Paraíso Tropical broke audience record

The last chapter of Paraíso Tropical recorded an audience of 55 points, according to Ibope data at the time. Each point was equivalent to 55 thousand households in Greater São Paulo. It was the soap opera’s record and a rate that would be difficult to match in the following years.
