In 1993, the public did not like Mariana in Reborn. The rejection of the character was so strong that actress Adriana Esteves, who plays her, suffered depression and retired from TV for a few years.
But, in 2024, things have changed a lot. This time, Mariana, played by Theresa Fonseca, was approved by Renascer viewers. Even controversial, the character managed to gain public understanding.
With this, Mariana became the key to making Renascer the success Globo expected. The public is eager for more clashes from the character, which could finally bring the soap opera out of its current state of lethargy.
Changes are already being made, but an even bigger change will have to be made by author Bruno Luperi to give the audience what they want.
Mariana approved
According to the F5 website, from Folha de S. Paulo, the discussion group for the soap opera Renascer pointed out that Mariana was approved by the public, contrary to what happened in the original version of the soap opera, written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa in 1993.
According to the publication, the survey showed that the public understands Mariana’s motivation, even considering her “stupid”. One of the reasons given for the current approval is the fact that the character is less childish than in 1993, which generated discomfort among the public at the time.
In addition to understanding Mariana’s motivation, the public also longs for more clashes between Belarmino’s granddaughter (Antonio Calloni) and other characters in the soap opera. In other words, Theresa Fonseca’s character got rid of a “curse” and could become Renascer’s salvation.
More clashes
Recently, Mariana gained a lot of prominence in Renascer. In the chapters in which she decided to leave José Inocêncio (Marcos Palmeira) and insinuate herself to João Pedro (Juan Paiva), the public embarked on the character’s saga.
On the web, the public started looking for more information about the character’s future. Furthermore, the repercussion of Renascer on the networks also experienced an increase during this period. This, added to the result of the discussion group, shows that Mariana has the potential to get Renascer out of the hole.
So far, the plot has not achieved the success Globo expected. The audience is not negligible, as it is larger than that of Terra e Paixão (2023) in the same period. However, Globo expected Renascer to achieve the same excitement as Pantanal (2022), which did not happen.
Salvation of the soap opera
Given this, Globo just won’t “save” Renascer if it doesn’t want to. After all, the public has already demonstrated that they want to see Mariana in action more often. Thus, it is up to author Bruno Luperi, who updates Benedito Ruy Barbosa’s text, to create new clashes for Theresa Fonseca’s character.
However, this may not be possible. After all, Bruno Luperi has already admitted that he works with a wide range of chapters and that Renascer is practically a “closed work”. In other words, it is not subject to radical changes based on audience reaction.
In the first version of Renascer, Mariana was so rejected that she ended up seeing her space diminish throughout the soap opera. As Luperi has maintained the path created by his grandfather practically unchanged, this could happen again. Which would be a waste.
