The Russian press also reported on Maganov’s death, but did not explain the source of the information or the reason why the businessman was in the hospital.

In recent months, since the beginning of the Ukrainian War, mysterious deaths of Russian multimillion-dollar oligarchs, mainly from the energy industry, have been recorded in different cities in Russia and Europe. No relationship between the cases has been confirmed.

Oil company Lukoil did not issue a statement on the death of Maganov, who had worked at the company since 1993. He oversaw oil refining, production and exploration, becoming president in 2020. His brother Nail is the head of Russian oil producer medium-sized Tatneft.

Ravil Maganov was a close associate of one of Lukoil’s founders, Vagit Alekperov, a former Soviet deputy oil minister, who resigned as chairman of the company in April, a week after the UK imposed an asset freeze and a travel ban as part of sanctions on Russian military actions in Ukraine.
