Discord was, for a long time, one of the few places on the internet without ads. This will change starting next week, when the gaming social media platform will now display advertisements, called “Sponsored Missions”.

Peter Sellis, senior vice president of product for the service, explained that ads will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen. They will be segmented according to user gameplay, age and location.

According to the North American newspaper Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the commercials will be from video game manufacturers. Giveaways will be offered to users who complete tasks in games while friends, or at least one person, watch via Discord.

Even with the arrival of ads on the platform, users will still have the ability to disable advertisements in the settings. However, the company did not explain whether anyone will be able to do this or only Nitro subscribers.

Still according to the WSJthe startup will hire employees to work in the sales sector, after laying off 17% of its staff in January.

Millions of users on Discord

Discord has more than 200 million monthly active users. The startup’s annual revenue reached the US$600 million mark, four times more than revenue in 2020. The main source is the subscription service, launched in 2016 to increase revenue.

In the Nitro modality, people can send large files, in addition to other advantages, for prices ranging from US$2.99 to US$9.99 per month. In Brazil, the service costs R$24.99 per month or R$249.99 per year.

The platform was founded in May 2015, with Microsoft offering US$10 billion as part of an acquisition proposal, which the company denied, in 2021. In the same year, Discord raised US$500 million and was valued at US$15 billion.
