Carlos Sainz did not have an easy life in qualifying this Saturday (3) in Zandvoort. The Ferrari driver was not in a position to fight with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, who won his 17th pole in his career and it was up to the Spaniard to take third place on the starting grid.
The Smooth Operator fought a fierce fight with the two Mercedes and with Sergio Pérez to secure this position. And he gave his vision of what it took to enter the fight for the front row in Holland.
“I had a clean lap, no mistakes, but that extra tenth was missing for Charles [Leclerc] and Max [Verstappen]. I was at the limit, I tried to use every meter of the track”, said the Spaniard, who was 0s092 behind the Red Bull Dutchman.

Sainz praised the decent work done by Ferrari during qualifying, as the team suffers too much from criticism for the decisions made in the season. “It wasn’t easy from Q1 to Q3 but in the end I think we did well. It’s very difficult on the track with these heavier cars, there’s a lot of tire overheating and degradation.”

For tomorrow’s race, Carlos is now picking up the pieces and predicting an interesting day. “There’s a lot going on, even if it’s hard to get past here. We’ll have a lot of options based on strategy,” he added.
