It was with emotion! Bia Haddad is qualified for the second round of the WTA 1000 in Rome, Italy. Quadrifinalist in the last edition, the Brazilian won comeback in her debut against the Chinese Xinyu Wang, number 42 in the world rankings. The score was 2-1, with scores of 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4, in 2h15 of play.
Beatriz Haddad is currently number 13 in the WTA rankings, which is why she started her journey in Rome in the main draw of the tournament. Her opponent, Xinyu Wang, also made her tournament debut this Thursday. The two had faced each other four times before today’s duel. Bia won the first three matches, but lost to the Chinese in the last match, on the hard court of the WTA 1000 in Doha.
The game
The match proved to be quite balanced from start to finish, and the Brazilian’s victory came with emotion. In the first game of the match, Wang broke Bia’s serve and took a 1-0 lead. Then, Haddad had two chances to return the break and tie the game, but he was unable to take advantage of them. The two tennis players then confirmed their services without much difficulty until the ninth game of the match, with 5-4 for the Chinese. When, in the next game, Bia Haddad obtained another break-point in her favor, but wasted it again.
The second half started very similar to the previous one. Again, Xinyu Wang broke Bia’s first serve, which, this time, she managed to return immediately to tie at 1-1. The two tennis players repeated the same script in the fifth and sixth games, leaving the score at 3-3. However, Bia Haddad played three games in a row and closed the match 6-3, tying the match.
Thus, the decision was left for the third and final set. More confident, Brazil’s number 1 tennis player took the lead with a break on Wang’s second serve. The Chinese even reacted and tied the match at 3-3, but Bia Haddad broke her opponent’s serve again to stay ahead on the scoreboard until the end.
Next confrontation
With the triumph, Beatriz Haddad qualified for the round of 32 of the WTA 1000 in Rome. Thus, she returns to the court to face the American Madison Keys, number 18 in the world rankings. The clash is scheduled to take place this Sunday (12), but the time has not yet been set.
