Italian referee Daniele Orsato could not contain his tears after the return game between PSG and Borussia Dortmund, this Tuesday (7/5), in the Champions League semi-final. But, after all, why did he still cry on the lawn of Parque dos Príncipes?

While Borussia players celebrated the 1-0 victory – which guaranteed qualification to the Champions League final after 11 years –, Orsato was experiencing a moment of introspection.

He cried because this was possibly his last Champions League match. One of the main referees in the world in recent times, the Italian is 48 years old and is approaching the end of his career.

The only match left in the Champions League this season is the final. Dortmund will face Real Madrid, who beat Bayern Munich in the other semi-final.

The teams will face each other at Wembley, in London, England, on June 1st (Saturday), at 4pm. UEFA has not yet announced who will be responsible for the whistle.

Orsato’s career

Daniele Orsato was born on November 23, 1975, in Montecchio Maggiore, Italy. He debuted in the elite of the Italian Championship in 2006 and, since then, has participated in several decisive matches at national and international level. With good ratings, he became a FIFA referee in 2014.

According to data from the TransfermarktOrsato refereed in competitions such as Qualifiers, World Cup, European Championship, Italian Cup, Nations League, Europa League, Champions League and several others.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he played in two group stage matches. Afterwards, he refereed the semi-final between Argentina and Croatia – won by Albiceleste 3-0.
