Abel’s favorite, Estévão is the new jewel of Palmeiras
Palmeiras can return from Uruguay on Thursday, with qualification to the round of 16 of the Conmebol Libertadores already guaranteed.
To do this, the leader of Group F needs to win their duel, which will be played at 7pm (Brasília time), against Liverpool, and count on a stumble (draw or defeat) by San Lorenzo, at home, against Indenpendiente del Valle, at the same time.
With seven points, Verdão will reach ten in case of victory, while Liverpool will remain stuck at four points. If there is a draw in San Lorenzo x Del Valle, the teams will go to two and five points, respectively. If Del Valle wins, the situation doesn’t change much for Palmeiras – the Ecuadorians would have seven, and the Argentines would have one.
Thus, the table for the penultimate round would look as follows:
- Palm trees – 10 points
- Independence of the Valley – 5 points (or 7, if you beat San Lorenzo)
- Liverpool – 4 points
- San Lorenzo – 2 points (or 1, if you lose to Del Valle)
If this combination of results happens, Palmeiras could lose the last two games (Independiente del Valle and San Lorenzo, both at home) and would still be in at least second place in Group F.
A victory for San Lorenzo on Thursday would make it impossible for Verdão to qualify early. This is because Del Valle and San Lorenzo themselves could still reach the 10 points of the alviverde team – the goal difference would be decisive in this scenario.
For the duel in Montevideo, Abel Ferreira will have maximum strength. Raphael Veiga should return to the starting lineup, replacing Luis Guilherme.
