McLaren won the Formula 1 Miami GP, with Lando Norris overcoming Max Verstappen and winning for the first time in the category. However, team principal Andrea Stella played down fans’ excitement, stating that the team is not yet at the same level as Red Bull Racing.
“Yes, we have improved the car, we know how much and it is something real, you can see it in the lap time,” Stella told the press. “But for Red Bull, this race was a bit complicated. So, before saying that the pace we had is a representation of the future, I will not sign under that statement.”
Stella highlighted the need for more updates for McLaren to fight on equal terms with the current champion team.
“We will take this positive result, this incentive, as even more energy to develop the car possibly even faster than we are doing,” he said. “But in my opinion, if we want to consistently fight with Red Bull, we need to deliver another package like the one we brought here. In Japan, we were six tenths behind Red Bull in the qualifying session. In China, again, we were a few tenths behind. It would be completely unrealistic to think that what we saw in Miami is a definitive portrait of competitiveness. I think that here, Red Bull was unable to get the most out of the package”, concluded Stella.
