During the winter of 2023/24, Mavericks, known for its challenging waves, had a season full of twists and turns. The season, boosted by El Niño, brought happy days with perfect waves, shaped by gentle onshore winds. However, there were also moments of frustration, with rough waves and unfavorable winds.
The highlight of the season was the Mavericks Awards ceremony, organized by local businesspeople in Half Moon Bay. The event rewarded surfers and cameramen who stood out in the previous season. With a total prize pool of US$25,000, distributed across three categories: Ride of the Year, Biggest Wave and Performer of the Year, the winners took home US$5,000 per prize.

Other highlights include San Diego’s Jojo Roper, recognized for Biggest Wave, and Santa Cruz’s Wilem Banks, who received the Best Wave award. With Mavericks dormant for the next few months, surfers will have to wait patiently to ride the waves again.
In short, the Mavericks season was marked by highs and lows, reflecting the unpredictability of the ocean, but it also celebrated the talented surfers and cameramen who challenged Mavericks’ giant waves.
