If there is a major controversial topic in Brazilian football, it is the FIFA Club World Cup. After all, football’s highest governing body decided to unify some achievements and started to consider some teams as world champions – but not all. Now, it was time to highlight the Brazilians’ historic campaigns in the biggest club tournament, and Corinthians was once again mentioned.

“The FIFA Club World Cup has historically dominated European teams since its creation at the beginning of the century. Only three clubs in Brazil managed to defeat those in Europe on the way to the title: Corinthians (twice, in 2000 and 2012), São Paulo (2005) and Internacional (2006)”, said FIFA on its official website.

Alongside São Paulo and Inter, Corinthians steals the spotlight on the FIFA website

In addition to talking about the achievements of São Paulo and Internacional – over Liverpool and Barcelona, respectively -, praising the games played by Rogério Ceni and Iarley, FIFA saved a special chapter on its website to remember the 2012 title, by Corinthians over the Chelsea.

Ronaldo Fenômeno meets Malcom and the news quickly resonates with Corinthians

“They said that Frank Lampard, Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Fernando Torres and their teammates would have no problem giving a sixth consecutive world title to a European club. Instead, they came across the magnificent performances of Paulo André, Chicão, Paulinho, Danilo and especially goalkeeper Cássio. It was the last time that the title was out of the hands of a club from the Old Continent”.

Furthermore, football’s highest governing body also highlighted an interview given by the black and white goalkeeper, a big name in this historic feat: “I still get emotional when I think about it. When we went to catch the flight to Japan, the airport was crazy, it was unbelievable. So when we played, the entire stadium was black and white. The noise was deafening. I have no words to describe the support we received.”
