This Monday morning (6), the first qualifying session of the Brazilian swimming Olympic Trials took place in Rio de Janeiro. Highlight is the 400m freestyle competition, where Brazil already has three athletes with ratings from other competitions. Guilherme “Cachorrão” Costa, in the men’s group, and Maria Fernanda Costa, in the women’s group, won their heats and will swim in lane four in the final tonight.

The finals of the Olympic Trials will define the classifieds for Paris-2024, with the two best teams in each event qualifying if they reach the index. If no one achieves the target time in the final, the so-called “salvaguada times” will be used, marks that athletes have achieved in important competitions since last year below the Olympic index.

Bronze medalist at the 2022 World Cup, Guilherme Costa, the Dogman, already has the index in the race, but he shouldn’t have any difficulty confirming it tonight. He swam the heat in 3:49.05 to finish first. It’s worth keeping an eye on Eduardo Moraes and Stephan Steverink who will swim alongside Cachorrão and have the potential to swim below the Olympic index for the race.

In the women’s 400m freestyle, Maria Fernanda Costa was the fastest with a time of 4min10s83, followed by Gabrielle Roncatto, with 4min13s31. The pair have also swum below the Olympic index and should have no difficulty reaching the mark again in the final.

Keeping an eye on the relay

In the women’s 100m butterfly and men’s 100m breaststroke, no athlete entered with a registration time below the Olympic index. Even if they don’t achieve the mark, there is a possibility that the event champions will be part of the mixed 4x100m medley relay. In the 100m breaststroke, João Gomes Júnior was the fastest in the qualifiers with a time of 1min00s87.

Among the women, Celine Bispo was the fastest in the 100m butterfly qualifiers, with a time of 59.76. The surprise is due to the early elimination of Giovanna Diamante, semi-finalist in the 2022 World Cup and who has already swum in the region of 57 seconds, close to the Olympic rate. Giovanna came in 11th place with a time of 1min00s83
