In the last heat of the World Athletics Relay for a place in the Paris Olympic Games, Brazil achieved a great result. Lucas Carvalho, Lucas Vilas, Vitor Hugo Miranda and Matheus Lima did a great race and secured a place for the country in the men’s 4x400m relay. In the other events, Brazil did not qualify, depending on the Olympic ranking to get one of the last places in Paris.

In the mixed 4x400m relay, CBAt chose to remove Brazil from the race to take maximum strength in the men’s and women’s events. In the men’s category, the Brazilian team kept changing the formation of the first day, placing Matheus Lima, the fastest athlete in Brazil, to finish. Lucas Carvalho took the lead in the first leg of the relay. The Brazilian team fell to second place after a sprint by the Australian team in the third leg, but Vitor Hugo soon regained the lead and handed the baton to Matheus to finish the race with a time of 3min01s86.

The Brazilian women’s team, with Jainy Barreto, Letícia Nonato, Maria Victoria de Sena and Anny Caroline de Bassi, had a good race, finishing in third place, with a time of 3min31s60. It is Brazil’s best time in the race since 2016.

Disappointment in the 4x100m

The biggest expectation was for the men’s 4x100m relay. The race has already won three Olympic medals for Brazil and was the main focus of the Brazilian Athletics Confederation (CBAt), which sent the athletes to a 40-day training camp in the United States before the World Relays Championship. In today’s repechage, the Brazilian team formed by Rodrigo Nascimento, Renan Gallina, Felipe Bardi and Paulo André Camilo started well in the race. In the last pass, PA was in contention for the top spots, but the Brazilian quartet ended up in fourth place in the heat, with a time of 38s72.

The World Relays distributes 14 direct places in Paris-2024: for the eight finalists and the two best in each repechage series. The last two places are defined by the world ranking. Brazil is the best team on the list among those without a place in the men’s 4x100m, but there are other strong countries with times close to ours.

In the women’s version of the race, Gabriela Mourão, Ana Azevedo, Lorraine Martins and Vitória Rosa came in fifth place in their heat, with a time of 43s51. Unlike the men’s team, they had little training time for the World Cup, having problems with some baton passes.
