Alpine once again did not perform well, but at least it did not occupy the last positions in the Sprint classification of the Formula 1 Miami GP. Esteban Ocon took P13 and Pierre Gasly took P16 to the starting grid of the Sprint race collapsed.
Ocon: “It is positive that we have progressed to Q2 in the Sprint classification, but it is obviously disappointing to be so close and to miss out on the top 10 by just half a tenth. They are also small, encouraging signs that the gap is closing. I was happy with the first lap in Q2 and the car’s behavior, and the grip increased throughout the lap. But I pushed too hard on the second lap and had difficulties with the tires at the end. I went up in the first sector but I couldn’t hold on during the lap, which is also a good learning experience for tomorrow’s GP qualifying session. There are some things we can work on and resolve overnight and try to move forward in the Sprint race and take the next step in the qualifying session.”
Gasly: “The car was definitely better today and we were able to progress in Q1. My first lap was strong, but on the second attempt I lost the car on the quick changes of direction in turns 5 and 6. This was not ideal and the lap ended from there with no way to improve. It’s a shame, because today we feel much closer to others. We’ll spend some time figuring out a few things and seeing what we can improve tomorrow. We have the Sprint race and then the qualifying session for Sunday’s GP. There is a lot more to come from me this weekend”, concluded the French driver.
