When he entered the octagon set up in Apex – the UFC’s event center, in Nevada, in the United States -, on Saturday night (27/4), flyweight Matheus Nicolau, 31 years old, from Belo Horizonte, was considered the favorite. After all, the opponent of the athlete from Minas Gerais, the North American Alex Perez, 32, had come from three consecutive defeats in the main MMA league in the world.

Furthermore, Perez accepted the fight against Nicolau a few weeks in advance, meaning he only had a few days to prepare. Initially, the BH fighter’s rival in this edition of the UFC would be Angolan Manel Kape. However, he suffered a rib injury and was removed from the event.

What was seen in Apex was the American’s broad dominance in the main fight of the night. Alex Perez rehabilitated himself in the UFC by delivering a tough knockout to the BH fighter, with a right cross, in the second round.

With the setback, Matheus Nicolau, who is currently in fifth place in the flyweight rankings, is expected to drop a few positions. He had already lost to fellow American Brandon Royval in April last year.
